The Case for Off-Platform Salesforce ETL Solutions

As you may have heard, Salesforce is considering Informatica as a potential acquisition target to bolster its ETL capabilities. This strategic move aligns with a commitment to continuously enhance customers' Salesforce functionality and enriched data aggregation capabilities. But it also exposes limitations in the platform for use cases focused on needing access to the data model (scheme, data, and metadata) for usefulness beyond native connectors; which provide only viewership rights.

Do you want to view the data? Or do you need to use it for integration purposes throughout the enterprise data fabric and with other data sources?

Let’s examine the advantages of using an off-platform copy of your Salesforce data for ETL and reverse-ETL capabilities.

Data Agility and Flexibility

An off-platform copy of Salesforce data provides greater flexibility and agility in data management. Companies can perform complex data transformations without affecting primary instance performance. It can be used for backup, disaster recovery, development, testing, data analysis, etc. It helps companies minimize data loss, improve data quality, and enhance business performance.

Reduced Risk of Data Loss

The conventional ETL  processes involve manipulating data directly within the Salesforce environment, which can expose companies to potential risks such as data loss or corruption. To avoid these risks, businesses can opt for an off-platform copy of their data. By leveraging an off-platform copy, companies can ensure the integrity and security of their data, thus mitigating the risks of data loss or corruption that may arise during the ETL processes.

Enhanced Scalability

Off-platform ETL  solutions offer scalability advantages, allowing organizations to scale their data integration processes based on evolving business needs and growing data volumes. They provide the flexibility to accommodate large and complex data sets, making it easier to extract, transform, and load data from multiple sources.

With off-platform ETL solutions, organizations can benefit from reduced processing times and increased efficiency. These solutions can handle large volumes of data at a faster rate than traditional on-platform ETL solutions.

Support for Reverse-ETL

In addition to traditional ETL capabilities, off-platform copies of Salesforce data enable organizations to perform reverse-ETL processes, allowing them to synchronize data from external systems back into Salesforce. This bidirectional data flow facilitates seamless data integration across the entire organization and ensures data consistency across systems.

Is there a “right or wrong” answer? Definitely not. But if you need to use your Salesforce data model for anything other than viewing it, an off-platform version of the data is likely the right answer.

Hello, my name is Ted Pappas, and welcome to Radical Transparency.

In this video series, we’ll talk about why having an off-platform copy of your Salesforce data is critical to your business.

And we’ll work under the Salesforce pillar of equal education. My goal in this series is really, really simple. It’s to make sure that everyone in the Salesforce community is equally educated with the artist possible of a Salesforce backup off-platform.

And today we’re going to talk about Salesforce’s recent announcement with Informatica as an acquisition target. It’s something our customers and prospects are talking to me about every day and members of our team multiple times a day.

But first, you’re probably thinking, why is a Salesforce backup company that backs up data off-platform? Why did they think it’s interesting that there is a potential Informatica acquisition, and the reason is this, Salesforce is suggesting to the marketplace that there are major deficiencies in ETL capabilities for their in-platform products, presumably, Data Cloud and MuleSoft.

And I’ll pause and say this. If you are looking to aggregate data for viewership purposes, aggregate data, and integrate data to view it from system one to system two, Data Cloud and MuleSoft are fantastic products. If you’re looking to migrate, or move the data asset from Salesforce, to use it for integration purposes into another data set to then enrich, enhance, integrate a report on that data, the functionality in-platform is extremely limited.

So we care about it. Because we take data out of platform. We do it with high frequency and high fidelity to a point that you can integrate that data the Salesforce data model into other data sources for enrichment and enhancement. And then you can reverse ETL back into Salesforce.

So again, my name is Ted Pappas. I’m the CEO of CapStorm, please visit us at ca storm.com please find me on LinkedIn, I love it when I get messages on LinkedIn. But the most important thing is please come back next Thursday for another episode of Radical Transparency. And thank you very much.
