Strategies to Minimize Salesforce RPO and RTO

When businesses rely on Salesforce as their primary platform for operations, ensuring that the Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and Recovery Time Objective (RTO) are met as quickly as possible becomes critical. This is not just a matter of convenience but a strategic necessity. To achieve this, having the tightest RPO and RTO, along with an off-platform backup of your Salesforce data, is essential to sustain business continuity and mitigate risks.

Frequency of Extraction via the Salesforce API’s

Utilizing the Salesforce APIs for data extraction enables businesses to keep their backups and archives in almost real-time synchronization. This frequent extraction guarantees that the backup data is as close to real-time as feasible, lowering the risk of data loss in the event of a system failure or cyberattack. With high-frequency extractions, businesses can restore the data model from disruptions in a matter of minutes instead of hours or days.

Referential Integrity of the Data Model

Salesforce has a complex data structure comprising multiple interconnected objects and fields. To ensure the accuracy and consistency of the data, referential integrity must be maintained throughout this data model. When dealing with backups, it is essential to capture not only individual records but also the relationships between them. This ensures that businesses can restore their Salesforce environment with confidence, knowing that all dependencies between data elements remain unchanged.

Point-in-Time Snapshots

Business environments are dynamic and can change rapidly. In such situations, having the ability to restore to a specific point in time can prove to be invaluable. Point-in-time snapshots allow businesses to roll back to a specific previous state of their Salesforce data to the exact minute of their last backup frequency. This can be achieved by using an off-platform backup that enables point-in-time snapshotting. By doing so, businesses can mitigate risks associated with data manipulation errors, malicious activities, or compliance violations.

It is crucial for your business to have the fastest Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and Recovery Time Objective (RTO), which can be supported by an off-platform backup of your Salesforce data. By prioritizing high-frequency extraction through the APIs, maintaining the referential integrity of the data model, and enabling point-in-time snapshots, businesses can leverage the backup as a strategic initiative instead of just a feature for operational support.

Video Transcription

Welcome to Radical Transparency, my name is Ted Pappas.

And in this video series we’ll talk about why having a Salesforce backup off-platform is critical to your business.

And we’ll work under the Salesforce pillar of equal education. My goal in this series is very simple. It’s to make sure that everyone in the Salesforce community is equally educated with the art of possible of a Salesforce backup off-platform.

And in today’s episode, we’re going to talk about a use case that some customers just view as a checking-the-box scenario, and more mature customers view this as a critical component to their business. And it’s having the fastest RTO, the recovery time objective, and the fastest RPO, the recovery point objective available to you in the industry.

And it’s two things that leads to a third. And the first is the frequency of the backup. How fast can you get the data from the publicly available Salesforce APIs into a relational database behind your firewall, we can do it at increments of every three minutes. So every three minutes, you get a near real-time copy of your data out of your force.com platform onto a relational database. And I don’t want to get too long-winded here. But this is important. After the first copy of the data, everything beyond that is just a Delta sync.

So don’t think, “oh my gosh, I’ve got a full copy every time I’ve got to de-dupe this thing, I’m going to have latency issues.” That’s not the case, we’re only doing Delta syncs at increments of every three minutes.

The second thing is referential integrity. Whether it’s schema, data, or metadata data, with an unlimited amount of relationship depths, the depths can go as far into the data model as you need to go, you get 100% referential integrity of that data model at the frequency rates that you choose.

So what does that mean? The third thing, it means you get the best recovery point objective in the industry in the event of a disaster, and you have to recover the entire data model. You can do it in minutes, not hours or days.

But more customers experience this, you have bad data, you have a bad actor, or you just have something in the data model that is corrupt. Having an off-platform backup allows you to recover a single point in time at the last frequency rate of your backup.

So what that means is this – you can roll that back to a single point in time within a matter of minutes and recover everything in the data model that needs to be recovered off platform backups for a single point in time recovery, down to the frequency of a minute.

So again, my name is Ted Pappas. I’m the CEO of CapStorm. Please visit us at capstorm.com. Please find me on LinkedIn. But the most important thing is, please come back next Thursday for another episode of Radical Transparency. And thank you very much.
