A Salesforce divestiture, or when a Salesforce org is split and divided into separate orgs,  is usually a timely project to complete. But what happens when a company that originally had 6 months to complete the process is given drastically less time? In Episode 16 of Data Unleashed, we’re going to dive into one such story.

This customer was part of a parent company that was splitting off, and they were supposed to have 6 months to get all of their Salesforce data and metadata out of the parent company’s org and into their new one. Unfortunately, something went wrong, and they no longer had 6 months to complete it… Or one month… Or even one week! They had six days to get this accomplished.

Thankfully, they had CapStorm’s replication solutions at the helm, allowing them to pull their data out of Salesforce and aggregate it to their own Salesforce org. They were able to restore everything into their target org. They successfully complete the project, saving numerous jobs along the way. The amazing part? This was the admin and engineer’s first migration project. Their ability to succeed saved their company from going out of business.

Hi, my name is Drew Niermann. And this is Data Unleashed –  the video blog series dedicated to helping you get more out of your investment in Salesforce.

Today I’m going to share a customer story about a customer I worked with about four or five years ago, that was a part of a Salesforce divestiture. They were splitting off from a parent company, and they were supposed to have six months to get all of their Salesforce data and metadata out of the parent companies or migrated over to their new greenfield org.

Unfortunately, there was something that went wrong, I don’t even know what it was. But at the executive level, something went awry and they were given six days, a total of six days to get their data out of the parent company’s org and migrated over to the target org.

I heard from a software engineer and a Salesforce administrator, who were obviously in a panic trying to figure out how in the world they were going to get all this data out of org A and over to Org B. Fortunately, they were both very sharp and were ready to act.

They used a replication software from CapStorm to pull the entire data model and their data out of Salesforce. Aggregating or segregating rather, the data that belonged to their organization by virtue of Salesforce profiles, permission sets and sharing rules.

Then, after replicating their data and metadata into a local SQL database, they were able to restore everything from that SQL environment to the target org – metadata first, followed by the data.

Now what we were told is that they completed the project and saved about 60 to 70 salespeople’s jobs because they were able to stand up a CRM in less than six days. Additionally, we were informed that the Salesforce administrator and the software engineer had never done a Salesforce data or metadata migration. And they completed it with in their words 95% accuracy. And the 95% accuracy wasn’t really a failure. For them, they were ecstatic about it. There’s just a handful of things they didn’t know about their data model, they forgot to check a few tick boxes within the CapStorm software that they use to migrate. But by and large, they basically save their company from going out of business. Having never done a Salesforce migration having never spoken with CapStorm before and with very little expertise in that specific area.

So if you’re in the middle of a Salesforce merger, migration, divestiture, or org split, and you don’t know how to handle it, talk to an expert. We’d be happy to talk with you about tooling, SIs or consulting partners and get you off on the right foot.

Again, this is Drew Niermann with Data Unleashed. Thank you so much for watching.
